Open positions: Development Associate

The Friends of the Public Garden (the Friends) is one of the oldest parks advocacy organizations in the nation, formed in 1970 by concerned Boston citizens when the Public Garden and Boston Common were almost beyond saving. The mission of the Friends is to preserve, protect and enhance Boston’s first public parks — the Boston Common, the Public Garden, and Commonwealth Avenue Mall, in partnership with the City of Boston Parks and Recreation Department. The Friends mobilizes advocacy for parks protection, provides ongoing care of trees, sculpture, fountains and other park elements, and conducts major improvement projects in the parks. The Friends has many active members who enjoy our annual social events and educational programs. The office is conveniently located in Beacon Hill, at 69 Beacon Street directly across from the Public Garden and Boston Common.

The Development Associate (Associate) reports to the Director of Development (Director) and is primarily responsible for providing support to, and working in collaboration with, the Director in implementing all of the Friends fundraising activities. These activities include mail appeals, special events, like the Green and White Ball, the Summer Party, Members Reception and major donor receptions, corporate and foundation outreach, and special campaigns. The Associate has the lead responsibility for managing the donor database and tracking and accounting for all donations received, mailing projects, event logistics and the supervision of development interns/volunteers. This position is the ideal opportunity for someone with some development experience who is interested in a career in Development or Nonprofit Management.

The Associates’s specific duties include the following:

I. Administrative Support

• Telephone and receptionist duties, with other front office staff, to provide excellent customer service to all callers and visitors to the office
• With guidance from the Director, recruit and supervise volunteers and interns helping with development activities

II. Membership and Donor Relations Support

• Assist the Director with managing all aspects of the annual giving campaigns from accurate list preparation to coordinating with the printer and mailhouse
• Manage the Bloomerang donor database including online giving forms and email tool
• Reconcile all gifts received monthly with finance department
• Respond to donor inquiries via telephone and email, drafting custom responses for review by the Director
• Write donor communications content for social media, newsletters, and acknowledgment letters as needed
• Conduct prospect research on individuals, corporations and foundations and assist with proposal writing.

III. Event Support

• As part of a team, participate in planning new events and improving existing events
• Coordinate logistics with vendors, site representatives and committee members
• Manage the invitation and response process
• Produce all needed signage and other event materials
• Manage volunteer help and event registration process
• Manage other on-site event activities, such as a raffle, assisting with photography and speakers


  1. A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of relevant work experience
    A minimum of one year of fundraising experience (can be volunteer work), preferably in event planning and coordination
  2. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications
  3. Ability to master fundraising databases with ease and to train others
  4. Familiarity with online fundraising technology
  5. Superior attention to detail and accuracy in writing and record-keeping; able to proofread own work effectively
  6. Experience with leading and motivating volunteers
  7. Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced environment
  8. Ability to be organized, self-motivated and self-directed; able to work with minimal supervision
  9. Interest in the development field and the mission and programs of the Friends
  10. Ability to be flexible and work harmoniously in a small office environment
  11. Availability for occasional evening events and meetings
